Mt. Kenya Sirimon Routes

This route starts from the East around the Mount Kenya from Nanyuki. You reach the about 10 km North along the track on 4WD vehicle. The Sirimon route is remote, less frequented and easy to climb.
The trail climbs up through an astonishing forest that gradually turns into moorland covered with giant heather. At Old Moses Hut the main track becomes a path that a gently gets uphill before splitting into two routes. The vegetation becomes sparser, with giant lobelia and amazing groundsels. The path climbs over a ridge and you reach the point Lenana for sunrise for a magnificent view of the surroundings.

5 Days Sirimon Route

Day 1 Sermon Park Gate to Old Moses Camp – 9km, approx. 3/4 hours

You leave Nairobi at 8.00am and drive through the Central Highlands to Nanyuki by 11.00 am. We allow sufficient time to have lunch and then get to

Sirimon Park Gate a comfortable four-wheel drive vehicle. Check in and start hiking through the beautiful rain forest to Old Moses Camp at alt.3,300m.

Day 2 Shipton’s Camp – 16km, approx. 7/8 hours

Early breakfast at 7.00am. Hike through the Liki Valley via Mackinder’s Valley to Shipton’s Camp at alt. 4,200m. Have lunch served en route. At Shipton’s camp you enjoy a splendid view of the north faces of Nelion and Batian peaks. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3 Peak Circuit for Acclimatization – 4 hours

After breakfast you start the peak circuit to help acclimatization, ascending to a steep ridge through Kami Hut, Hausberg Tarn and Two Tarns Lake. It will take approx. 4 hours walk through some of the most spectacular sceneries. Return to Shipton’s Camp. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 4  Point Lenana at alt. 4,985m and back to Old Moses – 4 hours

You wake up at night at 2.30am for hot tea and biscuits. Ascent to Point Lenana at 4,985m for approx. 3 hours to arrive for sunrise. From here you can admire Mt. Kilimanjaro’s highest peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi visible from the south, Indian Ocean from the east and Mt. Elgon from the west. You start your descend back to Shipton’s camp for a full breakfast. Leave at 10.00am for Old Moses. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 5 Drive back to Nairobi

After breakfast you leave camp to reach the park gate via the Sirimon route. Drive to Nanyuki for lunch and then to Nairobi arriving in the late afternoon to celebrate your success. Dinner & Overnight at the hotel on B&B basis. End of services.

6 Days Sirimon Route

Day 1  Nairobi-Old Moses Camp-3300m

Leave Nairobi at 8.00 am to Nanyuki, which normally takes 2hrs drive, arriving at 11.00, then proceed to Mt Kenya National Park Sirimon gate, picnic lunch will be provided. After lunch, follow the track uphill for 10 kms, forking left at the junction to reach Old Moses camp which is situated at 3,300m. The ascent from Sirimon gate to Old Moses is 690m. Dinner/overnight.

Day 2  Old Moses Camp-Likii North.

After breakfast, leave at 8.00 am, follow the directions for the direct route, until you reach the fork after one hour. The track becomes a path, and swings right and south round the head of a large valley, crossing several small streams to reach the crest of the ridge between the Otulili and Likii North Valleys. A walk of 3 to 4 hours to Liki North hut at 3,993m. Dinner/overnight.

Day 3  Likii North-Shipton Camp

After breakfast, ascend the west side of the Valley, over a ridge, then down into the Mackinder’s Valley to meet the direct route, taking one to two hours. From here, follow the Mackinder’s Valley to reach Shipton camp, a total of 4 hours from Likii to Shipton camp at 4,250m. Dinner/overnight.

Day 4   Shipton’s Camp 4200m-Point Lenana 4985m-Mintos Hut-4200m

Wake up at 2.00 a.m., have tea and biscuits, then leave at 3.00 a.m. for the Lenana summit. This section is a long, hard slog, and the path is indistinct in places. Continue walking across a tough scree, until you come across Harris Tarn. From Harris Tarn, continue up the north face of Point Lenana reaching the summit after approx. 45 minutes at 4,985m, for the sunrise at 6.30 a.m. After enjoying the views and taking your pictures, descend down to Mintos hut for your overnight.

Day 5  Mintos Hut-Meru Mt Kenya Bandas

After breakfast continue descending down to Meru Mount Kenya Bandas above Chogoria, following the Gorges Valley. It will take 5 hours to reach the Bandas. Dinner/overnight.

Day 6   Bandas-Chogoria-Nairobi

After morning breakfast, continue walking down through the bamboo and indigenous forest to reach Bairunyi to meet up with your transport back to Nairobi
